Every boy, girl, woman and man-ifesto!

Every boy, girl, woman and man-ifesto!

I woke up this morning and engaged in my usual ritual with the tiny hand-held misery machine to check the news and justify my extra 20 minutes under then duvet. It was not good news; I mean it was really, really terrible news (US health insurance, Syria, Chechnya etc); dismal news, as my local friends lamented not only at the result of the local Metro Mayoral election and the low voting turn out; but also just fretting and whining about the general… well shitness of everything right now; politics, advertising campaigns, even the ever...

Cure or Con? Unravelling the debate on alternative medicine

Cure or Con? Unravelling the debate on alternative medicine

This may seem like a controversial topic to some, but there is a subject that comes up frequently in discussions I have, and with our NHS currently facing threat – and on the other side of the Pond, our US friends seeing their healthcare system in a different kind of jeopardy, it’s one worth examining. I am in the fortunate position of bridging two areas of healthcare. On the one hand, hypnotherapy comes under the broad umbrella of therapies that could be considered ‘holistic’ or ‘alternative’, whilst also having a solid grounding in...

Be Empowered by International Women’s Day

Happy International Women’s Day 2017! It has become a tradition for me to  celebrate, thank and revere the women who inspire me, teach me and support me; and so I will start by doing that: YOU ARE ALL AWESOME! But being the inspiring, amazing women that they are, I’m sure they won’t mind me breaking with tradition this year and instead, giving a bit of hope and practical solution to women who maybe are not feeling so empowered. It’s a tough world for women at the moment, with certain countries determined to roll back women’s rights, and...

Springing South of the River

Springing South of the River

In case you missed my last blog post about my imminent relocation, I can now announce that I have now moved! It’s been a fairly chaotic few weeks but I am now getting settled in my new home. Moving can be a really stressful time, in fact one of the most stressful, and so it’s been a good chance for me to ‘practice what I preach’ and put some of my self-care routines into practice; if anything is a good test of a mental health hygiene routine it is moving (actually even a basic hygiene routine is put under pressure when you can’t remember...

NEWS FLASH: I’m on the move!

NEWS FLASH: I’m on the move!

So after a long, and rather stressful few months I am pleased to announce that I am finally on the move! I am upping sticks from my current home, and lovely home clinic in Montpelier to a new home south of the river in Southville. I will still be seeing clients in Bristol and on Skype, and this move actually means that I will be available in more areas of the city. I’ll be working out of Alma Vale Hypnotherapy in Clifton every Thursday. This is particularly exciting, as I have previously worked at Alma Vale and know what a lovely space it is...

A New Resolution for February

A New Resolution for February

So we’re nearly at the end of January. We’ve passed the apparent, so-called “most depressing day of the year” and the home stretch is in sight. How are you doing? How are you getting on with the ‘new you’? I mean you are a new person now, right? You changed your body, habits, schedule, personality and diet overnight on the 31st of December didn’t you? The truth is, if anyone promises that you can be a ‘new you’ you should think very seriously about what they are actually asking of you. What exactly is wrong with the old you? What is wrong...

The best and worst questions to ask a hypnotherapist

The best and worst questions to ask a hypnotherapist

I’ll admit it, for the first few years after I completed my training as a hypnotherapist, I would cringe if anyone asked me what I did for a living. Not because I’m not incredibly proud and happy with my career, but because I would quite often be faced with stupid comments and questions. Now don’t get me wrong, I love talking about my job, I am enthusiastic about helping people and a complete geek when it comes to chatting about how the brain works, I can talk about it for hours… try me! But often when you say you’re a hypnotherapist, some...

Relationships? Piece of cake!

Relationships? Piece of cake!

Today I just want to share a little metaphor with you that I use with a lot of my clients, especially those who are getting over old relationships or really looking to get into a new relationship, but are not sure they’re quite ready. The Great British Bake Off is also back on our screens, so my mind is full of baked goods at the moment. A wise person once told me, that relationships should be the icing on the cake in life; they’re not the cake itself! And while that is wisdom indeed, this metaphor can be expanded… You cannot ice an...

What you may not know about Pokémon Go

What you may not know about Pokémon Go

I’ll admit, when Pokémon Go was released back in June of this year, I didn’t instantly see what all the fuss was about. Don’t tell anyone, but I’m a little too old for the nostalgia it created. When Pokémon first happened, I’d just moved on to my ‘cider, gigs and eyeliner’ phase, and Pokémon was just something my nephews and the kids I would babysit for pocket money were into. So when I saw Pikachu popping up all over my social media feeds, I assumed this was none of my business and a fad that would pass me by. But then I started to...

Breath: Use the force!

Breath: Use the force!

If you delve into the history of hypnotherapy then you’ll probably come across an Austrian fellow called Franz Mesmer, considered one of the ‘grandfathers’ of hypnotism. In fact for a while, hypnosis was actually called Mesmerism after this curious 18th Century physician. Mesmer may have been practising hypnosis but he didn’t really have the understanding of how it worked the way we understand it today. He believed that we had a sort of magnetic ‘fluid’ running through us, that he could influence through his powers, as well as iron...
